Expert's Corner
Keep cool through August!

Andrew Troelsen — Intertech Partner, Instructor, and

                                                                         Best-Selling Author

Hey Everyone,

First, thanks to all of you, 2008 is shaping up to be our best year ever. To recognize and reward all of you who’ve provided referrals to our firm, we’re offering over $37,000 in prizes in our Lead-A-Ganza contest. Prizes include training for a year, software, books, an iPhone, and, of course, a box of Intertech monkeys. Find out all of the details in this downloadable .pdf.

In this issue, we’ve got great content and an invitation to a free seminar. For the content, we have:

  • 5 tips for avoiding the icebergs in software architecture
  • 7 charts that show employment, job growth, and globalization statistics
  • 10 useful sites for Java developers
  • 1 article how on how to effectively use consultants
  • 3 tips for managing emails, phone calls, and getting work done at work

For the free seminar, I’ll be presenting at Microsoft’s Bloomington, MN location on September 4th from 9:00 to 11:00 on Silverlight. In this presentation, you will come to understand the Silverlight framework and runtime plug-in, the role of Silverlight XAML, base class library integration the ASP.NET Silverlight web controls. This talk will also contract the functionality of Silverlight 2.0 to previous releases and overview numerous development tools (such as Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Blend). As in the past, these events fill to capacity so register today.

Finally, we’ve got limited seats remaining in several of our popular courses in August. If you’re on the fence, I encourage you to sign up sooner than later to ensure you receive a seat:

  • Complete WPF (September 10-12). If you’re doing .NET 3.X and need to spin-up fast on WPF, this course is a perfect fit and will be taught by yours truly.
  • Complete Struts (August 20-22). Targeted to the professional Java developer using Eclipse, this course assumes you know everything Java and are ready to focus on Struts.
  • Complete SSIS (August 18-20). Designed for professionals with little or no ETL experience, this course makes students productive with the SSIS tools and technologies.

Happy Summer,

Andrew Troelsen

Commandments for Consultants: First, Do No Harm

Tom Salonek, Intertech Founder and CEO — Upsize

Just like doctors, consultants of all stripes should subscribe to the credo, “First, do no harm.” Granted, most consultants are not affecting outcomes as dramatic as life or death, but they do have the ability to seriously cripple an organization with bloated bills, bad advice, and self-serving policies that only serve the health of the consultant’s bottom line…
