 Feature Story

Understanding Generics

With the release of .NET 2.0, the C# programming language has been enhanced to support features of the CTS termed generics. Simply put, generics provide a way for programming placeholders (formally termed type parameters) for method arguments and type definitions, which are specified at the time of invoking the generic method or creating the generic type.

Get the entire chapter Understanding Generics FREE from Pro C# 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform by Andrew Troelsen, Intertech partner, trainer, and international best-selling author author.

 Editor's Corner

Welcome to The Software Developer

Jim White

Hello,

I'm Jim White, Intertech Director of Training and Instructor.  This month I'm stepping up again as the editor of The Software Developer.

In the Feature Story (right above this column), .NET expert, international best-selling .NET author, and fellow Intertech instructor, Andrew Troelsen, shares his expertise on .NET Generics.  Thanks to our friends at APress (our publishing partner behind the Intertech Instructor Series of books) there's a whole chapter from Andrew's award-winning book Pro C# and the .NET 2.0 Platform.

Speaking of Andrew, he'll be delivering a free technical briefing at Microsoft's Bloomington, MN facility.  Andrew will be sharing insights on open source tools to accelerate .NET development.  You can register online at Intertech's website

Being a Java instructor and wanting to keep balance, in this issue, there's also an article from fellow Intertech Java instructor Kevin Pumarlo.  Kevin shares provoking thoughts on the evolution of software development.

Finally, on a couple of notes on Intertech's line-up of hands-on workshops.  Check out Intertech's Complete JProbe -- a 2-day course authored by yours truly that focuses on Java application performance tuning and a revamped offering on .NET Architecture and Best Practices--Complete .NET Architecture and Best Practices -- 3-day course created by award-winning author Andrew Troelsen.

Happy February,

Jim

 ROI and Project Management

Churchill the PM
Winston Churchill is widely regarded as not only one of the greatest British Prime Ministers but also one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century. But was he a Project Manager in the modern sense, driving a project to completion?

 Coder's Corner

Evolution is alive and well – at least in the software world…

I’ve been playing this game long enough to have more than just a few gray hairs, and to have seen a lot of software technology and tools come and go. Long enough to see a ‘pattern’ evolve reflecting how and why those technologies and tools morphed to adapt to the times – their environment if you will...
