Using Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express Edition

An introduction to programming

by Andrew W. Troelsen, Microsoft MVP, Intertech Training

You can create a .NET application using a variety of approaches. Die-hard developers are free to take the commando approach and build .NET programs using a no-frills text editor (such as notepad.exe) and the C# command line compiler (csc.exe). While the .NET Software Development Kit (SDK) is freely downloadable from Microsoft (www.microsoft.com/net), this approach will surely result in hand cramps, due to the SDK’s lack of code generation utilities (wizards), graphical debuggers and IntelliSense functionality.

Welcome to The Software Developer

Jeff Jensen

Hi. I’m Jeff Jensen, Intertech Java instructor and this month’s editor. Welcome to the latest issue of The Software Developer.

When Microsoft recently released its Express Edition product line, the company touted it as an ideal entry point for hobbyists, students and newcomers to the .NET platform. But using these products can still be tricky at times. In this month’s feature article, Intertech’s Andrew Troelsen provides an introduction to programming with Microsoft’s Visual C# 2005 Express Edition. He also provides links to several sites that provide further information on using this product.

In Coder's Corner, Intertech’s Dominic Selly details how to generate client side script using dropdown lists. And our Best of the Web section provides links to articles that will help you on your path to personal and professional development.

If you have a suggestion for a feature article — or if there are any programming tips you’d like for us to provide — please let us know. All comments are greatly appreciated.
