Prevent Brand and Revenue Erosion

Five strategies for protecting your assets from spam

by Meryl K. Evans and Tamara Halbritter

According to The Spamhaus Project, the United States is the top country in the world with “ISPs [internet service providers] currently providing countries with connectivity and hosting to spam gangs directly responsible for the world’s spam problem” (SBL database, 2005). China ranks second and South Korea third, but all this means is that globally, we have a big problem. Many of us are bombarded by spam daily. In some organizations, over 50 percent of the mail received is spam. In others, by using technical solutions such as email authentication and other spam blockers in combination with smart company decisions and policies, only five or less percent of the messages received are spam.

All Marketers Are Liars

by Seth Godin

Every marketer tells a story. And if they do it right, we believe them. We believe that wine tastes better in a $20 glass than a $1 glass. We believe that an $80,000 Porsche Cayenne is vastly superior to a $36,000 VW Touareg, which is virtually the same car. We believe that $225 Pumas will make our feet feel better-and look cooler-than $20 no-names ... and believing it makes it true. [ Read Meryl's Review ]

Protect Your Assets

Last issue's feature covered a different perspective on how spam emails hurt our businesses. In the newest article, we show you how to increase your chances of getting into your readers' inboxes.

When an accident happens, my youngest says, "Uh-oh." In the last issue, I accidentally put in the wrong best advice response. I'm not going to make excuses and have already eaten my own dog food. Now you can see the advice readers gave to a reader who asked about finding the right template for her newsletter.

Do you have a question about writing or online marketing? Share your question and it might be the next question to challenge our readers. If you ask or respond to a question, your name gets entered into a virtual drawing for a pair of Garmin Rino 100 MP3 GPS. Ooh.

June is a big month for anniversaries, as it's the most popular month for weddings — thanks to school being out for the summer and the weather being predictable in most areas of the U.S. I had a June wedding on June 11, 1989. I was not "married" to the month of June, but it worked out best schedule-wise.

In business, we have anniversaries for everything: how long a product has been around; how long a company has been in business; even how long a Web site or blog has been running. My blog turned five on June 1. What anniversaries do you celebrate? Any big ones coming?

How we doin' with this newsletter? We have a suggestion / complaint box so you can tell us what makes you happy.

Best,
Meryl K. Evans

What Would You Do?

Last Issue We Asked You:

In Search of Mr. (or Miss or Mrs.) Good Template

My new job as a communications manager includes creating a monthly newsletter for distribution to our global business offices and agents. The newsletter will contain graphs, pictures and AutoCad layouts. I need a simple, efficient template that can handle these requirements. How do you choose the right template, and can a newsletter be put on a SharePoint site?

This Issue's Dilemma:

Pickin’ the right newsletter format

I'm developing a fee-based e-newsletter designed to be paid for/sponsored by larger organizations on behalf of their members/employees/clients. I intend to have each issue distributed — not by me through a master database — but by this collection of sponsoring organizations. I'm assuming they'd prefer to retain control of distribution and addresses, and spam-blockers won't be as much of an issue when the e-newsletter issue is sent internally. What would be the ideal format for such a newsletter (i.e., HTML email with article links to a Web site, PDF attachment or send a link to readers for the online newsletter)?
