Three Years in Internet Time

Wow! It's the end of '03 and I realize that it also marks the end of the 3rd year of publishing.  It is gratifying to know that 88% of you who were subscribers back then are still around and thousands more have joined you.  We hope 2003 was good to you and that 2004 will be better and peaceful.

It's time for us to 'eat our own dogfood' - follow our own advice about evaluating the progress of our newsletter.  The goals of the eNewsletter Journal, our readers, and the statistics gathered told us it was time to shake things up. So, starting next month you will see some changes ...

In this issue, our friend Jenna Glatzer, the Editor-in-Chief of Absolute Write, shows how to make our jobs easier as newsletter editors and publishers by creating writers' guidelines. Check out her Amazon best selling book, Outwitting Writer's Block.

Jenna has the honor of being the first official guest contributor to eNJ. If you would like to make a guest appearance, please contact us.

Let us know how well (or not) the newsletter is meeting your needs by taking a snappy reader survey and you could win a Handspring Prism handheld device.

We wish you a happy New Year and we'll see you in oh-four!

Best wishes,
Meryl K. Evans
Editor

Publishing Strategies

If You Guide Them, They Will Come

Help writers aim for the bull's eye

by Jenna Glatzer, Editor-in-Chief of Absolute Write

As a newsletter editor and freelance writer, I get to see writers’ guidelines from all angles: I write them and I read them. If you’re looking for articles for your newsletter, it pays to spend some time telling writers exactly what your wish list looks like.

Newsletter Wars: Email Vs. RSS

Lockergnome voices pro-RSS opinion

Chris Pirillo, Publisher, Lockergnome
speaks with Meryl K. Evans, Editor, eNewsletter Journal

How big is your bookmark (or favorites) file? Since the file is a basic text file, they are small. However, many of us keep adding to the file and never deleting a single URL. We arrive at a site and think, "Cool! That will come in handy when I …"

Is RSS The Great Spaminator?

Dealing with Spam: There is no silver bullet

by Julie Shapiro, InternetVIZ

Panic mongers claim the only way to eliminate spam is to stop using email and switch to another technology. That’s like stopping telemarketing calls by telling the phone company to haul away your phone line or telling the post office to stop delivering mail to your house or office, because you are tired of dealing with junk mail. While these drastic measures may solve the problem, they are impractical ...
