Building the Foundation for a Predictive Enterprise

Two pillars that support servers help those on the journey

by Meryl K. Evans, Editor, Connected Digest

TV meteorologists don't look outside to make weather predictions. They rely on various tools and knowledge to help their viewers prepare for the weather ahead. Connected Digest recently explored the Predictive Enterprise, which gives companies the tools and knowledge to predict their business futures.

The Predictive Enterprise moves your business away from being reactive and toward being proactive. This lets you respond faster to marketplace, business climate, economic and competitive changes. Becoming a Predictive Enterprise isn't a dream — it's already becoming a reality for many companies.

Building pillars ... Dealing with an evil boss ... Generation gaps

Building a Predictive Enterprise lets a company receive real-time analytics, improve security and enjoy energy savings. This month's feature story addresses the fundamental pillars in the journey to the Predictive Enterprise.

Getting stuck with an evil boss happens, and it's often out of our control. Readers provide advice on how to ease stress levels when spending a lot of time with a difficult boss. Today's work environment contains generations that differ from one another. It can be tricky to ensure you meet everyone's needs as their manager. How do you handle a mix of Baby Boomer, GenX and GenY employees (and soon, millennials)?

Thanks for your feedback, questions and suggestions. Some readers have asked about topics we covered in earlier issues. Check out the newsletter archives. And as a thank you for filling out the feedback form, we'll enter your name into a drawing for a chance to win an Oregon Scientific - WeatherNow II Weather Station with MSN Direct Service.

Transforming a Global Data Center Environment

The goal is to save over $1,000,000,000 by increasing efficiency and utilization, standardization, consolidation, employing grid computing virtualization and energy-efficient computing, and more.

This Issue's Dilemma

How do you handle the generation gap within a single team?

I manage a team from Generation Y, Generation X and the Baby Boom. Lately, I've noticed issues surrounding the "generational gap." Sometimes, it’s hard for seasoned managers to deal with youth and vice versa.

It seems like managers should work harder to bridge this gap instead on looking to others to change. Maybe I'm reading too much into this.  It could be more of an issue of dealing with individual personalities than generations.

Should I take steps to manage the generation gap, or am I just not grasping the situation correctly?

Last Issue's Dilemma

How do you deal with an evil boss?

I'm sure many employees have run into a mean, rude boss in their careers. Right now, I'm dealing with one, and she's making life at work miserable. Mine sounds almost like the clueless boss from The Office, only she's a real person. She loves to point out people's mistakes and reprimand them in public. She yells and puts people down.

I can tell others feel the same way — there's an air in the environment that's hard to ignore. Unfortunately, Boss Woman has been here for over 20 years, making the likelihood of her leaving smaller than marginal. I've tried to stay away and keep my head down, but this situation is affecting my mood and outlook on life.
