When you think of energy-efficient computing, do you think of the time it takes
for your screen saver to come on, or whether to power off your PC at the day's
end?
Energy-efficient computing in today's world is more than lowering the amount of
power a computer uses, or improving a computer's performance. The focus is much
larger than a single computer, or group of systems or servers.
Companies must consider many factors including the demand for more computing
power, trying to balance today's best science and technology with rising energy
costs, the ongoing struggle with costs vs. return on investment and other
factors. For example, to ensure energy efficiency, you should measure the amount
of power going into your data center vs. the amount of power that actually
reaches a particular server at any time. This requires a series of tools and
built-in system capabilities to maximize environmental efficiency.
Large-scale greening ... Broken ladder ... Bad employees
Greening of today's powerhouse technology and energy usage no longer relies on
little things like requiring employees turn off computers at the end of the day.
This month's feature story
explores innovative solutions for improving energy efficiency — to lower
operating costs and meet enterprise commitment to operate more ecologically.

It's my experience that a person can give a great interview and end up being a terrible employee. This happens in spite of that person interviewing several times with different employees — from potential colleagues to two managers above the position.
This process also involves checking on the person's references. Of course, we know few people would provide bad references to a potential employer. And some people are naturally good at talking to strangers, so they ace interviews.
Management has overlooked me for a promotion several times. I'm concerned it's a career kiss of death. I'm about five to eight years from retirement, so maybe I shouldn't care. I do my best to be a strong contributor and respectful of everyone and the company. Many of my colleagues are frustrated about the lack of promotions, too, and they're not all close to retirement.
Should we just stop wishing and keep our heads down? Or is there something we can do to help nudge us into a new position?
