Re-authorizing the Higher Education Act

A threat or stimulus to accreditation and institutional freedom?

Gregory Fusco, Vice President for Government and Public Affairs, Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) speaks with Higher Education Digest

Uncle Sam rewarded his American soldiers after World War II by supporting their education through the GI Bill, which enabled them to go to college. Again, the nation is in a time of war. The question remains unanswered whether war is spurring education, or if the looming deficit it’s creating is hampering education. One thing remains certain: the Higher Education Act has to be re-authorized; it’s about to expire.

What's Your Best Advice?
Last Issue's Dilemma:

How can colleges and universities encourage businesses and industry to invest in higher education?

I am a development officer at a four-year institution in the Midwest. Recently, the Provost asked me to "think creatively" about how the university could encourage businesses to "invest" in higher education. I’m in the midst of interviewing faculty, staff, and business executives to get their perspective. It’s my hope that colleagues reading the Higher Education Digest might have successfully attracted financial support for colleges and universities and could share their experience or ideas on attracting investors of this nature. Brainstorming how businesses can support higher education is so important with shrinking federal/state support.

Could you please help?

This Issue's Dilemma:

Grooming People for Promotion

A recent report to the Board of Trustees stated that 42% of our faculty will be eligible to retire during the next five years. Those of us who are in mid-career are wondering what will happen with the academic leadership. Some express interest in an institution-sponsored academic leadership development program – selecting the very best for potential promotion. Others are highly critical of the thought that current leaders would have control over future department chairs, deans, and vice presidents. This camp lobbies for open searches and choosing leaders from national pools.

Which is the most effective approach?
