The Bright Future of Institutional Accreditation
|
Seeing a workable process emerge despite varied expectations
Judith Watkins, Vice President of Accreditation Services, Council for Higher Education speaks with Higher Education Digest
In many universities today the accreditation process is bogged down with excess expectations. This makes it hard to see clearly what the accreditation process and its outcomes are all about. In this environment, the value of such an activity, one that’s critical to the university’s very livelihood, becomes blurred.

The Digest’s focus this month is on institutional accreditation issues. While accreditation is a critical concern for each institution, we are not always aware of emerging trends and developing issues. I encourage you to take time to review accreditation issues with Judith Watkins of CHEA, Washington, D.C.
In each issue of the Higher Education Digest, we offer practical advice on how to improve your organizational and professional lives. Please let me know how successful we are. What's Your Best Advice?
Last Issue's Dilemma:
Income generator or resource drainer
The
local business community is asking us to offer a new certificate program in
business and computer programming. Our central administration looks at this as
an income opportunity. However, there is no funding, or even release time for
all involved to create the curriculum or course administration.
We
realize this could bring in both new students and revenue, but we are already
overwhelmed with the short courses and other employer-based programs that we
offer. The administration doesn’t understand how short-staffed we are.
How do we develop
consensus on new initiatives and create practical plans for achieving them?

This Issue's Dilemma:
Leadership Opportunity or Career Limiting Move?
Following the retirement of a popular and long-tenured President, I began my new college presidency in August 2003. The campus experienced continuing success during the past 15 years in enrollment and physical expansion. While budget increases were modest over the years, campus morale was steady. Assessing the current state of the institution, I find the leadership to be stagnant and unimaginative. Budget distribution has been skewed toward two less productive units. No innovation is evident.
Then In October, the state announced a mandatory budget reduction of 10% for the current fiscal year. As I assess the situation, I am becoming convinced that major strategic and personnel changes must coincide with immediate budget cuts. As I consider the institution’s future I ponder the stress, conflict, confusion, and trauma that awaits.
How do I decide priorities and what will be my guiding principles?
