What's Your Best Advice?
Last Issue's Dilemma:

Everyone wants the same thing – only different!

Hot seat 101 … In today’s economy, we have to justify our existence more than ever before. Everyone wants to know what we are doing and how well we do it - trustees, state coordinating boards, legislators, the local paper - even Congress!

Each entity asks for the same things, only in a different way. It’s like flavors of ice cream -- some want peppermint, others want vanilla. But no matter how you dish it out, they’re all the same scoop … how effective are we in preparing students and serving the community-at-large?

Where should we start?

This Issue's Dilemma:

Income generator or resource drainer?

The local business community is asking us to offer a new certificate program in business and computer programming. Our central administration looks at this as an income opportunity. However, there is no funding, or even release time for all involved to create the curriculum or course administration.

We realize this could bring in both new students and revenue, but we are already overwhelmed with the short courses and other employer-based programs that we offer. The administration doesn’t understand how short-staffed we are.

How do we develop consensus on new initiatives?

-  Trevor, Dean of Technical/Professional Programs
