Training Made Easy
How to structure a compliance
training system even auditors will like
by Bill Koch,
Editor, Compliance Advisor
In high school, I was that rare type of geek
who wanted to pursue writing, television production and all things creative, but
at the same time, I had an aptitude for math. Somehow, during placement testing
before my freshman year, I was placed in advanced math without my total
enthusiasm. [

The importance of training for compliance
Trey Sullivan |
For a community bank without an established “training department,” keeping your employees up to date on compliance regulations can be a daunting task. This month’s feature article shows how adopting online training and using a learning management system can help anyone feel like he or she has a training department even the big guys would envy.
Last month, we asked how you deal with report overload and we found that you have some very effective ways to integrate information. This month, we ask how you deal with cashing U.S. Treasury checks from non-customers. We need your best advice.
To keep this material relevant to you, I invite you to become actively involved

Last Issue's Dilemma:
Too
much information?
With
the increased amount of monitoring necessary to stay in compliance, I feel like
I’m reading different reports from different systems all day long. I have to
read separate reports from deposits, loans, trust, brokerage, wire transfers,
monetary instruments and so on.
How are
other compliance officers monitoring account activities for all facets of BSA?
Ideally, I’d like to have software or a process where information from all
banking departments can be compiled into one report so I can monitor the
activities of customers who might fit into the AML program.
Is there a streamlined system other compliance officers use now? Or am I doomed
to be stuck in report overload?

This Issue's Dilemma:
Is the non-customer always right?
We get many requests
from non-customers to cash U.S. Treasury checks. We are the only bank in a very
rural community, so I hate to turn away customers. But I also know we are
supposed to run OFAC checks on each of these Treasury checks that I process.
This takes extra time for our tellers and our compliance officer.
Should I refuse to
cash these checks from the general public or should I take the extra time to
run the proper compliance procedures?
How do other community banks handle these
requests from non-customers? Do I have
any alternatives?
