Welcome to Municipal Technology Journal

Hello, Tamara Halbritter from Municipal Technology Journal here.  Each month we will provide information that will help you cope with the unique challenges faced by mid-size cities and counties across America.

Today, world events are felt on a local level more than ever before.  As budgets are slashed, local government leaders continually face new issues.  As revenue shrinks, governments are looking to reduce their workforce.  MTJ will offer practical advice on how to improve your business lives and increase your productivity.

Please let me know how successful we are at including articles  relevant to your professional life.  We want this monthly journal to be a valuable addition to your workday.  Your feedback will help achieve that goal.  You can win a color Palm Pilot by completing a 1-minute survey located below.

Local Government Vehicles: Take them or leave them?

"We are in a debate whether or not to allow employees to take municipal vehicles home or use them outside of work.  Like many debates, there seems to be legitimate reasons for and against such a practice.

Pros to taking vehicles home:

  • Employees can go straight to the problem instead of having to report to a central office first
  • In the case of Police/Sheriff's vehicles, they may be a crime deterrent in the neighborhood

Cons to taking vehicles home:

  • Additional vehicle wear
  • Vehicles may be needed for other shifts
  • Local government liability during non-working hours

Your readers probably have some experience with this issue.  Would you ask them what they think?  Does sending municipal vehicles home really make sense, or are we just providing free rentals?"
