Negotiating Your Way to a Better Experience — for You and Your Attendees

How to get your best hotel deal

Event Organizer’s e-Journal speaks with Joan L. Eisenstodt, Chief Strategist at Eisenstodt Associates, LLC.

We all remember the story of Goldilocks. When she grew tired after a long stroll through the forest, she came upon a house and, of course, let herself in. Once inside, she helped herself to some grub. The first bowl of porridge was too hot, the second too cold, the third just right. Exhausted, she went upstairs where she tried out three beds until she found the perfect one.

Once upon a time, event organizers could take a similar approach to finding a hotel. They’d go to the proposed venue, look around a couple of hotels to see what the rooms looked like and maybe try some food.

Editorial Corner

Welcome to the latest issue of Event Organizer’s eJournal — the newsletter that focuses on helping event organizers, planners and producers increase attendance, delight attendees and make more money at their events.

When you take your event “on the road,” how do you determine the right hotel to house your program and your attendees? Do you know what kind of concessions to ask for? And when it comes to the negotiation process, do you find yourself acting as a lion or a lamb? In this month’s feature article, Joan L. Eisenstodt, the chief strategist at Eisenstodt Associates, explains how to find the right hotel and negotiate your way to the best deal possible. A CIC Hall of Leaders inductee, Ms. Eisenstodt has been honored by several event associations and consistently appears on the List of the 25 Most Influential in the [Meetings/Hospitality] Industry, so her insights are invaluable.

In last month’s issue, a reader asked for advice on going green. After seeing what our readers have to say, you may just want to go green yourself. This month, another reader has a boss who keeps piling on the work, despite her busy schedule and the fact that the work has nothing to do with the events she’s responsible for. How does she get this guy to get real? And congratulations to Syd Fredrickson, Event Coordinator of Seattle Event Horizons for being this quarter’s winner!

If you have a problem you’d like some help with — or if you have an idea for a future article — please let us know. Your input helps us make our newsletter more relevant for all our readers!

What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma

Kermit had it right: It’s not easy being green

I work for a mid-sized event organizer, and we’ve decided to incorporate more “green” elements into our events. I’ve heard a lot about this topic, but I’m having trouble figuring out how to get started.

Does anyone know where I can find good resources to learn more about going green? Or perhaps someone can share with me his or her experience making this transition?

— Joanie, Event Manager

This Issue's Dilemma:

How do I get my boss to join the rest of us on planet Earth?

Like most event professionals, every minute of my workday is accounted for, and overtime has become the norm. Yet, my boss keeps asking me to help on projects that have nothing to do with my job. And if that’s not enough, he often asks me to take his place in department meetings, making my planned workday an even bigger disaster.

How can I get my boss to be more realistic in his demands? What do your readers think?

— Tom, Event Manager
