Digital Marketing

Using digital communications to promote events

by Gordon Taubenheim, Principal, Virtual Marketing Partners

Many recent studies have concluded that within the next 15 years, over two-thirds of all information will be communicated electronically. Broadband connectivity is generally considered the most important factor leading to the growth of Internet-based communications and platforms. Its standing as a growth driver is strengthened by third-generation wireless technology that enables mobile workers to access the Internet from their laptops or other mobile devices — including cell phones and Blackberries — through wireless broadband connections.

Editorial Corner

Welcome to the latest issue of Event Organizer’s eJournal — the newsletter that focuses on helping event organizers, planners and producers increase attendance, delight attendees and make more money at their events.

How do you promote your events? Do you send out snail mail? Have you ventured into the world of email? Or do you post the information on your Web site and hope potential attendees see it?

This month’s feature article discusses a new way to get the word out about your events — through digital communications. Written by Gordon Taubenheim, principal at Virtual Marketing Partners, this article explains why digital is the new wave in marketing — and how you can use it to your best advantage.

If you’ve ever wondered how to staff an event, check out our readers’ responses to last month’s dilemma. This month, a reader has a rather unique problem — a spouse who had a bit too much to drink and mouthed off to the boss. How do you think this reader should handle this ticklish situation that’s anything but funny?

Do you have a problem you’d like our readers to help you with? How about a story idea? Or maybe some opinions on our publication? If you send us any of these, we’ll enter you in our drawing for a special prize — a Kenwood two-way radio. All it takes is a few minutes of your time. We appreciate your input!

What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma

Who should do what — and when?

I wonder, at times, if I’m really maximizing my human resources when it comes to planning an event. Should I hire a temp to do the grunt work? Who should set up our booth? I’d like to ask your readers:

How do I make the best use of my employees and their skill sets when I organize an event? Your counterparts and I would like to know.

— Leo, Event Manager

This Issue's Dilemma:

Why couldn’t I have had a silent night this Christmas?

I work for a large event organizer in the Midwest. At this year’s company Christmas party, my spouse cornered my boss and complained to him about my “long hours and low pay.” I didn’t find out about this little encounter until we got home. I’m furious with my spouse, but with time, we’ll work it out. My boss is another matter.

Do I hope he was drunk, too, and won’t remember what happened? Or do I make a point of speaking to him about this conversation? If so, what do I say to him?

— Embarrassed (company withheld)
