A Look Back at ’06

Catch up on what you might have missed

from the editors of Event Organizer's eJournal

Some of the months of our calendar seem oddly named. September is derived from the Latin word for seven, even though it’s the ninth month of the year. October is derived from the Latin for eight, November from nine and December from 10.

But what we call one month — January — is very appropriate. It’s named for Janus, not the mutual fund, but the Roman god with two faces so he could look both forward and back at the same time. In honor of Janus, this month, Event Organizer’s eJournal takes a look back at the features from ’06, even while we plan for the coming year.

Editorial Corner

Welcome to the latest issue of Event Organizer’s eJournal — the newsletter that focuses on helping event organizers, planners and producers increase attendance, delight attendees and make more money at their events.

As a new year begins, we’re taking a look back at the feature articles that appeared in our newsletter during 2006. Why not take a few minutes to look over the synopses we’ve provided? Whether you missed a few — or just want to read them again — the link to every article is included for easy access.

In keeping with the spirit of the new year, Acteva recently announced the release of its new and enhanced User Interface. Acteva users now have access to a more streamlined event registration solution, as well as a wealth of advanced features to help create, publish and promote their events.

In future issues of our newsletter, the content in the Tips and Tricks section will now be based on this new interface and will, occasionally, include screen shots to highlight the changes that have been incorporated. This month’s Tips and Tricks section touches on some of the new benefits of this User Interface.

In last month’s issue, we included a dilemma almost every event professional faces: what to do about no-shows. See what your counterparts have to say. This month, a reader wants to know how he can better utilize his team members and temps when he organizes an event. What do you think?

If you respond to a reader’s dilemma or write in to comment on our newsletter, you not only provide your valuable input — you automatically enter yourself in a drawing for an Apple iPod™. Pamela S. Milan, President of  Milan and Associates, LLC, knows that. In fact, she is this quarter’s winner. So, why not take a few minutes to send us a message or respond to our reader’s dilemma, and enter our drawing at the same time?

Here’s to success in all of your events and endeavors for 2007!

What's Your Best Advice?

Last Issue's Dilemma

No more no-shows

I have a recurring problem with people who sign up for — and then decide at the last minute not to — attend an event. This means I’ve already counted them in the catering order and included them when sizing the room. Consequently, my cost per person comes out higher than planned, plus there are fewer prospects to meet via the event.

What’s the best strategy to decrease no-shows and improve attendance? Your counterparts and I would like to know.

— Tony, Event Manager

This Issue's Dilemma:

Who should do what — and when?

I wonder at times if I’m really maximizing my human resources when it comes to planning an event. Should I hire a temp to do the grunt work? Who should set up our booth? I’d like to ask your readers:

How do I make the best use of my employees and their skill sets when I organize an event? Your counterparts and I would like to know.

— Leo, Event Manager
